1995 Smith Woodhouse LBV. Got off early for the starting Labor Day weekend so decanted two hours ago when I got home. Blueberry nose. Very dark color still. Medium bodied. Allspice, licorice, menthol, and a little dose of typical soapiness when a Ruby transitions into older age. Mostly resolved tannins and moderate acidity. Medium length finish is a mix of drying plums, eucalyptus and leather. 88/100

Cotes du Rhone (Frank's place in Matraville): Aromas of fig, walnut, alcohol heat, raisin, slight prune, slight plain chocolate. Juicy, figgy, quite simplistic, textured tannic grip, black fruits, plums, figs, walnuts, alcoholic warmth is a little too intrusive for me.

This has been a very consistent and correct wine that is indeed very primary in nature. I don't think it has the depth of flavor to improve and would drink this up...

(Smith Woodhouse Late Bottled Vintage Port) Unfiltered; bottled 1999. An inky-ruby core and an essence of grape and dark fruits belie the age of this LBV. The palate offers intricate nuances of black cherry, tar, peppery spice, and brambly blackberry, while the midpalate is crammed with flavor. This ’95 is dense, focused, and primary, with a poised, silken texture that suggests a fine, teenage Vintage Port. I revisited it over the course of two weeks, and it never lost a step; it’s a classy LBV that is sure to drink well through 2020 or beyond. LBV: The Other Vintage Port
