Full color. Quite advanced on the nose for a 2005 with earthy notes. Full of flavor on the palate - densely packed - rich and textured for a Volnay with some unusual power. Yet no sense of overripeness. No easy sweetness here. Silky at the core. Plenty of acid framing the fruit. Tannins are becoming resolved and easing their dryness. Not a vineyard of particular elegance it seems to lack the florality of the best Volnay. Changed quite a bit over an hour, becoming more harmonious / less angular in the expression of its components. Hinting at being ready, I would still wait or give this a meaningful decant. Proximity to Pommard is evident. I think I would like it more if it was labelled Pommard. Impressive more than joyful. Bought on release. Very good the next day too.

Starting to become an enjoyable wine, especially on the nose with the mineral laden, red fruit sweetart type thing with some bark/earth and a bit of flowers on the brighter side. The wine still conveys a sense of density and you can feel the proximity to Pommard, though it is less dense and chewy. I think that a few more years will soften the palate though the tannins aren't as imposing as they were. I think this will likely make old bones and be one of those wines that really surprises down the line. I'll probably hold off for another 5 years before my next bottle.
Opened (for comparison) after finishing a bottle of L. Boillot, Gevrey, villages, 2005 (which was absolutely lovely). There are lots of similarities between the wines. As with the Gevrey (see tasting note on cellar tracker), this is well made and lovely. Perhaps less spicy, red fruits still apparent on the palate and I think there is more time left with this wine (a little bit of tannin still evident). So, justifies (?) the 1er cru status in that sense. 92

A Few 2005 Cote de Beaune Reds (The Wine Club, San Francisco): Deep center but lighter than the Henri Boillot. Subtle black fruit nose. Unlike the other wine, this is finely chiseled with fresh acidity, airiness, and beautiful expansion in the mouth. Tannic finish. A lovely Volnay and the wine of the tasting for me.

Nose is somewhat earthy with hints of mushroom over the black cherry fruit. Lovely cherry and raspberry with breathy hints of mushroom on the palate. Perfect play of tannin and acidity.
