  • Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Chalk Hill subregion of Sonoma County, California, this wine was aged in two types of new French oak, is 14.5% ABV, and is not mevushal. Appearance was deep, dark purple with heavy viscosity. The nose was high intensity with prominent notes of dark fruits including sweet blackberry, cassis, candied sugar plum, lots of floral notes of violets and roses, menthol, pencil shavings, cinnamon, and incense. On the palate it was quite tight, but seemed to be medium to full bodied, and a bit elegant and restrained compared to other vintages of this wine. Still, rich, opulent fruit, muscular, chalky tannins, with subtle but present acidity. Blackberries, cassis, black plum, loam, milk chocolate, tobacco, and vanilla. Long beautiful finish of plum sauce and baking chocolate. Awesome wine even for a down vintage but way, way too young and the bold fruit and crazy tannins overwhelm the subtleties of the wine, so put it away until at least 10 years past the vintage. 93-94.

  • Herzog, Limited Edition, Cabernet Sauvignon, Clone # Six, Warnecke Vineyard, Chalk Hill, 2017: Dark, almost black, impenetrable, inky royal purple, with on the nose notes of cassis, ripe blackberries, licorice, hints of toasted oak, green foliage, and cedar box. Full-bodied, intense, rich and flamboyant. On the palate, layers upon layers of rich, crunchy black fruit, licorice, graphite, fennel, with notes of thyme and eucalyptus, black pepper, freshly rolled cigar leaves, espresso and dark chocolate, with medium-plus acidity and powdery, searing tannins drying the mouth on the very long and plush finish. The similarity with its Special Edition Chalk Hill sibling is obvious yet this is even more concentrated, with a slightly more elegant mouthfeel. Incredible wine. 14.5% Abv. Drink 2025-2040, likely longer. 93
