  • Lovely wine. Very smooth. Paired beautifully with corned silverside

  • How Many Sides To a Polygon?

Just ask Zuccardi winemakers, as they have tried to define what it means to them. “Grapes coming from different places that can be imagined on a map with diverse shapes and edges. A weird geometry as diverse as the sides of a Polygon. As diverse as the wines of each town.” Sounds reasonable.

When you source only sustainably farmed Malbec grapes from 1,400 meters high in the area of the Uco Valley in Argentina, combine them with the expertise of a family winery, what you get is their:

Zuccardi Polígonos San Pablo Malbec 2018

Produced to reveal the grape's truest expression, Zuccardi uses only concrete vessels to ferment and age this beautiful wine. High altitude and sandy loam topsoil along with gravel and calcium carbonate lying just beneath, brings forth this wine’s interpretation of those characteristics.

Starting with bright dark cherry, mind you there is no "dry" in front of that, the wine is substantial but not overpowering. Tannins are minimal at best and help to create the soft exit that carries with it pleasant spice notes. This wine is a notch or two above that of what might be considered the average Malbec, so enjoyable, especially after a good hour or two decant.

I think that I may need to explore more of their offerings to get a true sense of the value of their many wines, care to join me?

    Cheers

  • PNP. Aromas jumps out of the glass. Dark Rudy red that stained the glass.
On the nose, ripe red fruits. Some leather and I did pick up some baked bread. On the palate is a totally different story. It was nothing you picked up on the nose. Really lacking in the fruit. I also got the lemon acidic note. I could finish the bottle and end up putting the rest down the drain. A really bad wine!

  • Decanted for four hours.

Prominent nose of bright red fruits with some gravelly/chalkiness as well. Very promising nose. Medium full body palate, very smooth tannins, and lemon-mineral acidity. Palate is lacking in fruit, and the acidity is out of balance. Finish brings the lemony acidic note and rocky earth flavors.

I’ve had much better Malbec from Argentina for less. Have one more bottle, but not sure what to do with it. Wouldn’t buy again and do not recommend this wine.

  • The previous review here with the 55 point score is for a different wine. This wine (the malbec) had a phenomenal nose that burst from the bottle as soon as the cork was out, especially freshly baked bread. And on drinking, the flavors promised by that nose were certainly there. Unfortunately they were also hidden behind a curtain of lemon that some may call zingy acidity, but I call sour. On the second night, the sour notes were much suppressed, but so too was the bouquet and the intense malbec flavors. Perhaps this one bottle was off, but I don't have any more to compare to.
