  • La Festa del Barolo: Rare Wine Dinner - Bartolo Mascarello (Legacy Records): From a magnum. This was the only wine of the tasting that seemed like it was just a bit off to me. Not corked per se, but not a perfect bottle. It happens. It’s a bit older than its years and it never quite softens from that. There’s a background of mustiness. Underneath it can see some of the nice wine, but with so many other great ones at the table this wasn’t a focus.

  • Charming nose: minerals, subtle earth, roses, cherry fruit.
Lovely fresh sweet fruit on the palate, pure and elegant.
A little astringency in the tannins on the finish that disappeared with food.
    Lovely.

  • Tasted blind next to the 1999 Cavalotto San Giuseppe. Unmistakable Barolo nose, roses and red fruit. Fine tannins that softened with air (the bottle was opened 4 hours before drinking). Still, a steric item wine and a pleasure to drink with beef stew. Lovely acidity, the epitome of elegance.

  • The '99 Bartolo is a great wine in the making. It's still very youthful and seems like it will be in an excellent spot in 5-10 years time. It hasn't budged in the 2 years since I last tasted it. The wine became much more expressive later in the evening with air. Nothing really stuck out with this wine, it's a textbook classic Barolo.

On the nose, I found a classic Barolo expression of dark red cherry fruit, fresh red rose, mint, licorice, earth, and a hint of tar. On the palate, the flavor expression was similarly classic with a core of dark red fruit, licorice, and fresh red red florals, and the texture was medium in body with meaningful tannins kicking in at the back end. The tannins are high quality and will likely integrate well with more years in the bottle, but there's more noticeable tannin here than the (more elegant) more recent, younger vintages of Mascarello.
