Pre-1996 Blind Napa vs Bordeaux (Ducru, Heitz, Abreu, Cos d'Estournel, Cask 23 & more) (Charlotte, NC): 1 hour double-decant. Showing some age on the rim, ruby in tone.Delightful, soft, dried fruit nose. Elegant on the mouthfeel. Extremely pleasing balance of secondary and tertiary notes while maintaining ample primary fruit resulting in an outstanding performance. Savory medium+ length finish cap off a fabulous wine. Overall Wine of the Night. Two 1st place votes, four 2nd place votes.
6 guesses for Bordeaux, 2 for Napa. My guess: 84 Stag’s Leap Cask 23

Not having experience with this wine/vintage, I opened the bottle an hour before dinner. 5-10 minutes in the decanter while I rinsed the bottle, and then poured straight back in, corked, and placed into the wine carrier.
From first glass to the last this wine was firing on all cylinders. Strong fruit, moderate acid and tannins, long finish. This wine had it all and is hitting a wonderful stride. There was no meaningful evolution with air as it was already delicious from the get-go. Drink this now or in ten years, I'm sure it will be great whenever you open it. Maybe in the 2030s the tertiary notes will start to dominate, but for now it's at a wonderful balance point and my bet is that persists for a while.

From Magnum. a nose loaded with cigar smoke, cedar and baked black fruits. On the palate I got old leather, figs, and cigar smoke. The wine was fresh with medium plus acidity and medium finish. This has peaked while still splendid look at how well these can age I think it is time to drink up.

Nice old California cab. Red fruit with earth tones. Balanced and well integrated.
