  • My first experience with this wine, and among my few experiences with Friuli reds at all. I was slightly apprehensive about the 14% alcohol, as that's higher than what we usually drink, but was game to try. Gave it a quick decant and served in Riedel Bordeaux stems. Very expressive nose of dark ripe fruit, blackberries and currants, even tart pluma, and a bundle of crushed savory herbs. No overt oak at all, just a slight touch of vanilla, more like someone had waved a vanilla bean nearby and the smell lingered. In the mouth this was deep and rich, but not weighty. This is not my usual red style at all, and my mouth and mind had to work hard to evaluate so far out of my wheelhouse. The mouthfeel was surprisingly clean, tannins nicely integrated, a little touch of the kind of dust that tickles your nose when you open an old closet. Despite the purported 14%, this did not come off as hot at all, nor was it extracted in the objectionable sense. Good balance, all in all. Very pleased! The other few bottles I bought will fill a place in the cellar not currently occupied by anything on hand. Cool wine, a lot of fun.
