  • Popped this 5 years too young. There's some damp cellar funk and dead roses on the nose. A good hour decant should tame this down. On the palate however, this is primarily all red fruit. Acid is relatively high for the vintage and the grip is assertive but not excessive. Tannins seem to have subsided a bit from what I see in other reviews. I still think this is in the very early stages of maturity and should develop for 10 years and gradually decline for another 10.

If you like pure fruit, save your money and go buy a good Langhe. If you like mature Barbaresco, wait on this. It's got enough extract and structure to develop nicely. Good, if not, long-term effort.

  • Good, with moments of very good. Color still holding fast, shows no age; Cork soaked 1/4, came out clean. In the first minute, lots of coca-cola on the nose, a bit odd. With 5 minutes in the glass, still some cola, but also some soil and red fruit and spice notes. It wasn't until 45 minutes into this (PnP) that it was truly expressive. That said, I'd decant this at least an hour or two (next time) if I wanted to see all this had to offer. Medium body, with good acidity and mostly resolved tannins. Actually, pretty fine structure, all things considered. Definitely got a sense of place, and to a somewhat lesser degree, a sense of variety, but some of the vintages attributes did nudge their way in from time to time, distracting from what is otherwise a very pretty Ovello. 13,5% abv., drink thru 2021. recommended

Served non-blind. An excellent value in the current, secondary market.

  • Double decanted for an hour or so, fresh and ready.

  • Had a magnum for Christmas Eve dinner - decanted several hours and was a real crowd-pleaser. Still plenty of cherry notes and very good balance.

  • hmm. Still some decent tannins and plenty of fruit, but the overwhelming impression was of volatile acidity (acetone on the nose something fierce). Not sure if this was flawed or not.
