  • Nose of maple syrup maybe a touch of hazelnut but hardly. There are some notes of hay and dusty road with a touch of orange zest. The palate is smooth and fruity with bitter almond shell sometimes shoeing through. Has oloroso character but different from others as well.

  • 100% Pedro Ximénez, from Montilla-Moriles (Sierra de Montilla and Moriles Altos). Oxidative aging for 25 years in American oak casks. Alcohol 19% ABV.

Rusty garnet colour. Lovely aroma of damp cigar leaf, orange peel, maple syrup, candied citrus rind, walnut shell, lemon toffee and polished, old mahogany furniture. On palate, rich with sufficient acidity, off-dry. Burnt toffee, dried apricots, sweetness from sultanas and figs, treacle, walnuts and some creamy, oak-derived vanilla. The acidity and some savoury and umami elements balance the sweeter notes. Not tannic. Quite ‘soft’ with satiny texture. Decent length. Great with walnuts and - I would imagine - a range of tapas. To me, not in the same class as the recent Gran Barquero Amontillado. At local pricing - similar to the Amontillado - not as good, but still a relative bargain.

  • Base wine for Oloroso is called ‘Color’ as it has some color to it already. 25 years of oxidative aging in Criaderas and Soleras systems. 19%
Softened palate, not as punchy as the 25 yr Amontillado, and not the tannin of the Amontillado either. Almost no tannin here - that’s the lack of flor in the aging.

  • Montilla-Moriles Showroom (Lavinia - Madrid): Aromatically speaking very expressive this time. Prevailing those smells of bergamot peel oil and almonds. Similar echoes on the palate. I missed more length and persistence.

Muy expresivo en nariz esta vez. Prevaleciendo esos aromas a aceite de bergamota y a almendras. Similares ecos al paladar. Me gustaría más longitud y persistencia.

  • No te Andes por las Ramas (Barra Territorio Era - Madrid): Served by the glass from a bottle opened at least one month ago.
Because I had high expectations in this 20 years old Oloroso it brings me down. My fault.
IMHO everything is on the palate. Good density, obviously oil texture, and quite long persistence.
On the other hand unbalanced on the nose with scratching alcohol and any pungency. Too late for this? Sincerely I don't know ... Let's try another day with a different bottle.
