From one of my favourite Australian producers, this is a really lovely Clare Valley Shiraz that strikes a balance between lean, savoury Rhône Syrah and plump, juicy Barossa Shiraz, leaning more towards the former but in an accessible, easy-drinking style. It has juice, to be sure, but the fruit isn't overdone, with tart pomegranate complementing the cherry, blackberry, and raspberry. It also shows oak influence, but only mildly with some cinnamon adding spice alongside black pepper. There's also some of that meaty character from the Rhône, as well as a wild herbal note that, were this French, we'd call garrigue. But overall, from its earthy-dusty nose through an admirably complex palate, with lively acidity and a mildly firm tannic backbone, it's all about that balance, so rare to find in Shiraz / Syrah on its own, and at $20 (in Ontario) it's yet another exceptional effort, both in terms of quality and value, from the Barry family.
