  • Notes from day two because first day it was so wound up in itself that it isn’t fair to score. Highly aromatic nose - high level, a bit of sweet oak and ripe, red fruit. Remarkably smooth in the mouth - glycerin. Balanced, red fruited, some cherry lozenge, long long finish, hanging in a good 45-50 seconds. Really impressive - but, as a reminder, it was most definitely not impressive day one. Take from that what you will.

  • Very underehelmed the first two days. Tight yes, but also seemed quite disjointed and a little hot. Third day a very different wine. Crunchy, fruity, a bit earthy and no noticeable heat.

  • from a tasting sample at the chateau (alongside their 2019 2nd label, relais). dark and brooding, the nose is superb with dark berry, cherries, currants, tobacco, damp earth. palate is juicy and youthful. lots of acidity and tannin. plenty of stuffing here to go the distance so patience will be rewarded.

  • This is a little bit more disjointed and not-ready-for-primetime relative to the last few vintages and I'm not sure it was quite in the mood to invite us in for an early look. Per the house style and geography it's a heavyweight by St. Emilion standards, and this vintage not just rich but also very muscular with its tannin and it needed a few hours of air to shift from raw and ripping to still tannic but now merely tight and grippy. But it remains a little drying as well as alcoholically stiff which was part of the challenge. The fruit is characteristic merlot plumminess though also heavily stamped with cigar-box oakiness, which added some interesting flavors on the back end but also contributed to the dryness and the challenge in getting enjoyment out of this at the moment.

  • One of the best Saint Emilion wines, this is the best Dominique I have had since I can recall. This is on a different level and there is no signs of oak at all. Just a voluptuous, tight potion of something very powerful, single pieced and dry. A peacock tail finish in line with Troplong Mondot. This is the QPR contender for 2019 Saint Emilion. Built to age!
