(CLUSEL ROCHE Cote Rotie) Clusel-Roche Dear Friends, This producer is on fire. If you are interested in organic/hand-made and hand-tended Cote Rotie of the highest order (in a format this is almost impossible to come by - half bottles), today's your day. Clusel-Roche is one of the early pioneers with natural and organic farming above Ampuis and they've inspired many others to go the same route. Everything is done the way it was in the 1800's with hand tills and no mechanization. Only herbs are used as "pesticides" and the resulting wines have a feminine, sultry blue-fruit purity that is immediately recognizable as Clusel-Roche. The Syrah from this producer has a Chambolle-like natural sap that is is sensual and delicate but mesmerizing all the same for its deceptive power and lasting impression on the palate. Often noted as producing the "Amoureuses of Cote Rotie", the analogy is easy to understand once a few sips are passed before your lips. In addition, the natural farming gives aromatics that mesh terroir, dark fruit, spice and violets all woven into a more serious note of pancetta. Taken as a whole, this is Syrah that could only come from a very specific hillside in the Northenr Rhone. The 2006 Cote Rotie is from a stellar year and they only produce a small number of half-bottles - we secured as many as we could (when do you ever get the chance to acquire Cote Rotie if this nature in half bottles? Not very often). Quantities are limited so I will leave it at that... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a beautiful and reflective wine in a perfect size for an impromptu lunch... Beautiful wine in a good place. Perfumed with plenty of rich red primary fruit still in abundance- red berries and cranberries. Evocative secondary, smoky overlay with emerging complex herby, mineral notes, with hints of cherry spice, charcuterie and refreshing salinity, with that rich red fruit base tone playing on in the background. It opened beautifully, such a pleasure, such a delight, such class.

On Thursday, we drank a few wines from the North Rhone blindly. Well made wines, but with very different styles. The WOTN was the E. Guigal Cotie Rotie La Mouline 2002. Classic and consistent. Amazing. The second wine was the Thierry Alemand Cornas Chaillot 2011. Great wine. For some it was the WOTN. The third wine was the Clusel Roch Cote Rotie 2006. Modern style. Good. The 4th wine was a huge disappointment. Bernard Levet's Cotie Rotie La Chavaroche 2012 looked like a Chilean wine with excess of guava.

Plenty of fruit, with some pleasantly tart cranberry notes, some earthiness, silky texture and good acidity. Nicely balanced. Mature, but still has enough structure to go a bit longer.

Definitely feminine. This reminds me of David Lett's adage about how color & concentration are be inversely correlated for Pinot. In this case, the smaller frame lets the rest of the package shine.
Lighter body. The nose starts out w/ a leather/charcuterie character. Ripe, briny olive tapenade on the palate. Tannins are well integrated. Like actual olives, the finish feels clipped, but still present minutes later. I don't think that this has anywhere to go, but this bottle would definitely last a couple more years & would be a good QPR at $60.

yeah, this is the stuff. dark fruits, mushrooms, smoked meats, and forest floor. Super sexy, polished, beautifully rendered. Why do I wait so long between bottles of N Rhone??
