  • Wow! Great wine, long complex taste bringing out the best of chenin

  • A blend of Chenin Blanc (68%), Verdelho (28%) and the remainder (4%) rounded out with Viognier. All the varieties are fermented spontaneously and aged separately in old foudres, neutral barriques and egg-shaped concrete tanks. Blended after 10 months of aging and bottled with a minimal dose of SO2. 13,5% alcohol. Total production 8355 bottles. Tasted blind.

Rather youthful yellow-green color. The nose feels characterful and somewhat creamy with nuanced aromas of sweet custard and ripe peach, some banana tones, light herby nuances, a little bit of sweet spices, a woody hint of untoasted oak and sawdust and a touch of fresh Golden Delicious apple. The wine feels broad, quite complex and moderately ripe on the palate with a full body and intense flavors of ripe apricot-driven yellow fruits, some sweet oak spice, light oaky nuances of vanilla and butter or custard character, a little bit of stony minerality, a hint of fresh pineapple and a touch of herby spice. The high acidity lends great sense of structure and freshness to the wine. The finish is long, dry and somewhat concentrated with an intense aftertaste of creamy oak and stony minerality, some woody notes of savory oak spice, a little bit of fresh red apple, light pineapple nuances, a hint of vanilla and a touch of herby spice.

A rich but also surprisingly serious and concentrated white with a lot of things going on here. You can see from the high acidity and mineral overtones that the wine is based on Chenin Blanc, but the peachy, tropical notes of Viognier and sappy, herby nuances of Verdelho do make their presence known as well. The wine is obviously still way too young, as the oak impact feels quite prominent, but based on the combination of fruit, acidity, concentration and body, this wine is built for the long haul. At the moment the wine is a bit on slightly too oaky side for my preference, but most likely this will get only better as it ages. Very promising stuff that calls for more age.

  • Excellent wine… Great complexity and one of the best chenin blanc based whites I have tasted. Nice acidity with pears, white peaches and apples. Nice pairing with grilled fish and seafood.

  • A very nice blend. Has got some oak and reduction to it, which makes it remins me of a Burgundy, but there are some distinctive fruit notes here that are definitely less Chardonnay. There is some peach, almond and lemon oil and there is appetizing slight bitterness. The oak becomes less prominent with air.

  • Served a bit cool, this was rather muted but air and a bit more warmth, this really blossomed. At 3 hours, this was superb: loads of energy and a great pithy texture. The best Rall wine I have tried.
