Reidemeister & Ulrichs (Bremen) bottling, "Haus Seefahrt, Schaffermahlzeit 8. Februar 1957". From an old German cellar, top shoulder level. Crumbly cork, but extracted completely albeit in bits and pieces. Enjoyed over four hours. Correct colour for age, mature but lively, with a lovely red core. The nose is completely fresh and intact without any off notes, and opens up quickly in the glass to a classical aromatic profile of black fruit, warm bricks, cedar and spices, with maybe a whiff of VA; the palate is structurally still intact but slightly delicate by now, with still some life-preserving tannins, although it has lost quite a bit of weight; the finish leaves the palate dry but perfumed and has good but not great length. A good bottle and a wonderful experience.

When entering this note, I was shocked to discover I have actually tasted this elder vintage before, although to be fair it was almost 15 years and more than 20,000 wines ago. Similar to the last time I tasted it, the best part of the wine is the complex nose, with its smoke-filled, campfire ember, cherry, wet earth and cigar box notes. Soft on the palate, medium bodied, and with freshness, but not enough length.

This is a terrific wine, which might have scored even higher had it not had the misfortune to be served alongside a perfect bottle of the 1953 Haut Brion! Notes of singed cassis, plum, dark spice, coal tar, truffle and cigar ash precede a rich, powerful and quite densely extracted wine with lots of fine-grained, rich, ripe tannins, underpinning a wine of incredible intensity and concentration. Just a touch of VA is noticeable on the nose, a common feature of La Mission in this era, but it in no way detracts from the wine's quality.

The Best Vintages of LMHB vs HB plus some extras (Restaurant Hohenzollern in Bad Neuenahr/Ahrweiler): LMHB 1950
Schwarzer Tee, Lebkuchen, Würze, Spekulatius, Zimt, etwas Cassis. Das alles kommt hier in geballter Ladung zusammen. Dazu sehr präzise Säure . Kommt nicht ganz an den 1949er heran, aber unendliche Länge, 98P
