  • A blend of Babić, Plavina, and Lasina. Aged for a year in American oak barrels. 13% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Extracted, almost fully opaque black cherry color with a slightest hint of haze, suggesting that the wine was unfiltered. The nose is funky, characterful and slightly bretty with quite wild aromas of merde, some phenolic spice, a little bit of spicy red apple, light sweet notes of wizened dark plums, a lifted hint of sweet VA and a touch of leathery funk. The wine is wild, moderately full-bodied and quite funky on the palate with ripe, complex flavors of juicy dark fruits, some apple core, a little bit of leather, light crunchy notes of rowanberries, a hint of sanguine iron and an animale touch of barnyard. The overall feel is enjoyably structured with the high acidity and moderately grippy tannins. The finish is long, sauvage and quite grippy with ripe yet fresh flavors of wizened dark plums, leather, some fresh blackcurrant, light crowberry tones, a little bit of apple core, a hint of stable floor and a slightly bitter touch of phenolic spice.

A fun, wild and funky Croatian red that feels more rustic and unpolished than excessively wild and "natty". Perhaps not that approachable for a pedestrian wine drinker with its firm structure and healthy dose of funk, this is nevertheless very charming and thoroughly enjoyable for those with geekier tastes. Very enjoyable stuff on its own and a reliable pairing with any heartier dishes. Most likely will continue to improve wonderfully in a cellar for many more years. Highly recommended.
