The CT roll over date of 2014 is way off. There was nothing about this that would even hint at that. We drank right from bottle. Deep ruby color. Beautiful nose. Got better as it sat. Would have benefitted from hour decant. So glad I have more. I’d say this has another 10-12 years.

Pinot Noir theme night at Maison Dakota. Pop and poured. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is cloudy - fine sediment, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with brett, meat, sweet tea leaves, earth, iron. Developed. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), coarse somewhat integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury meat, iron, earth, dark red cherries, dark red plums, some sweet tea leaves. Some cocoa powder and coffee. Long finish. Very good quality. True to the character of Vaucrains. Down and dirty version. Not as balanced as the 1999 Gouges Vaucrains I had the week before - which had a much less coarse tannins and texture. Excellent value though. Must have a been a monster Pinot during its youth, with oak to boot. Time to drink now.

For me, this is an unfortunate example of an overloaded and overdone Burgundy. There is terrific underlying fruit that is covered in oak spice. Rich and creamy, this is almost Pinot Noir in trying to be Chateauneuf. Still has good finishing acidity. Ok but I think it could have been so much better with a less heavy hand. Still a good bit of oak tannins - maybe more harmonious with a bit more age. At it sits in the decanter a while 3 things emerge: (1) the texture becomes softer and rounder; (2) a distinct orange peel element takes center stage and (3) the back end tannin become more integrated. Decant for a long time or keep. (89?)

Decanted and left open several hours, still rough tannins persist and softening over dinner. Large scaled fruit, cherry mainly without any earthy elements. More time should help as the fruit is big enough to last. Good amount of acid.

Deeper color than I would have expected for a fifteen year old wine. The nose is warm earth and dark fruits. The oak has settled nicely into the background. Very welcoming. The attack is big and bold and comes as a bit of a shock following the nose. Lots of extract and many layers of flavor through the mid-palate. In another twist, after all the heft of the wine, the finish is kind of weak. A very nice wine, certainly, but one that is full of contradictions. Maybe an awkward moment. Still very good. (91)
