  • Nose of freshly squeezed cherry juice and a hint of rosemary and mint. Deep ruby color; fairly dense. Earth, cherry liqueur, black currants and red pepper on the palate, with some spice notes (a subtle cinnamon, perhaps) near the end and on the finish. Strong acidity and fine tannins. It almost seems like there is some Primitivo blended in, but the label says that it is 100% Aglianico. A very nice wine, that I would definitely buy again. Went nicely with grilled marinated flank steaks and black bean rice.

  • The Golden Glass (Herbst Pavilion, Fort Mason, San Francisco): Wow, i enjoyed this even more than the Sicone. Again, it was the very end of the day so my note-taking was nonexistent, but this is one i will seek out. From the distributor: Valle del Trono is made from the best Aglianico vineyards in the southern Vulture appellation. Basilium processes the grapes from all the small growers in the consortium around Acerenza, allowing them to set aside the finest fruit for the long patient process of producing Aglianico del Vulture in the traditional manner. Judicious use of seasoned oak, without micro-oxygenation or other "modern" enhancements results in a medium-bodied wine, ready to be enjoyed with Southern Italian food.
