Haven’t been drinking many pinots lately and this was a great varietal revisit, really solid bones which paired very nicely with mushroom and bacon jam burgers.

Pungent. Black tea, stewed blackberry and a hint of dried herbs (oregano). Water palate. I find these wines from this particular region somewhat of a conundrum. I’ve been drinking and seeing how these wines have been made going back over a decade. My thought is that after all that time the wines have still not found their center. When you look at Burgundy-as an example, and other classic wine regions of the world, the wines can vary somewhat stylistically but they all have a common “center.” California Pinot noir, to this taster, is still trying to find that “center” that drives universal appeal. When someone drinks Bordeaux or high end Napa cab as example, there is an expectation of both quality and flavor profile. Much CA Pinot has this strange somewhat off putting aroma of stewed fruits and caramel oak and big fruit that just struggles to elevate itself up to world class status.
