Community Tasting Notes (4) Avg Score: 93 points

  • Brief notes on a comparative tasting of 2016, 2017, and 2018 Lagier-Meredith Malbec: All three were excellent and closer with a sumptuous character to Napa Valley fruit and varietals imported from Bordeaux than to either Argentinian Malbecs or French Malbecs from Cahors. Tannins were ripe and plush, and the dark red fruit (pomegranate, mulberry, cassis) dominated the mild floral aromatics (violets mostly). None of the wines exhibited a rubber hose note, a complaint I have had of a number of Malbecs from Mendoza.

2016: The most harmonious and elegant of the three, with slightly lower alcohol (13.6%). Refined rather than indulgently voluptuous, but still a stimulating sensual experience.
2017: A consensus favorite, having a bit more power and a sense of greater extract and substance in the mouth than the 2016. Combines the power of the 2018 and the refinement of the 2016.
2018: A fruit bomb, plush and powerful and may benefit from a few more years in the cellar, but rewarding already.

  • A couple of hours in the decanter are absolutely mandatory, and after that it turns into an umami bomb, with deep savory elements riding over the top of tightly wound black fruit. The more air it gets the more the blackberry fruit comes to the front, but it remains a more savory than fruity wine. There’s ample depth and structure for the several years of aging that it clearly needs to open up as express itself.

  • wound up ridiculously tight, don't even think about opening for at least 5 years. despite that it's clear there's tons of potential in here, there was one brief window where the fruit was able to shine through.

  • Hadn’t had before so sacrificed one over two nights. Solid polished smooth fruit. Evolved and balanced night two. This could age a decade and hang together nicely before moving on to middle age.
