The most distinctive quality of this wine is the huge, weighty texture on the palate, almost like half and half. It has plenty of life ahead of it, and I think it will probably gain complexity with 3-5 more years of age.

Somewhat restrained nose that gives a lot of lime zest and petrol, very reminiscent of a Clare Valley Riesling. Linear and powerful acidity shines on the palate and very good ripeness balancing.Maybe could be nice to revisit in a few years?

2020 Rippon Mature Old Vine Riesling was relatively rich and flamboyant, packed with atypical aromas of herbs and exotic stone fruits. Bottled under a TCA-free DIAM-5 cork, the youthful Riesling from Central Otago was clear and pale lemon in colour without any sediments. Underneath the varietal notes of tangerine, pomelo and mineral oil were intriguing aromas of basil herbs, rose hip tea and dragon eye fruits.
On the palate, it was off-dry and verging full-bodied, supported by a high level of piquant acidity. Ripe flavours of marmalade and yellow peach transitioned to lime zest, blood orange and smoke in a rather long, mineral-laced finish. Its richness and abundance of exotic fruit defied my expectations of a Riesling. The alcohol level was at 11.2%. The empty bottle weighed 575 grams.
The vines were planted in 1975 on schist gravel soils. The vineyard work followed biodynamic principles. The wine spent three months on the lees, imparting texture and weight on the palate.

C’est ma deuxième bouteille et je recommande effectivement de laisser vieillir même si c’est déjà agréable à boire. Ce riesling offre déjà une belle complexité et beaucoup de finesse.
