  • Drank this bottle on the heels of a zippy, elegant Bourgogne and the contrasting styles of the two wines really showed the wide range possible with Pinot noir.
Very dark, very purple color. Initial nose has lots of ripe, dark berry fruit (blackberries and boysenberries) intermixed with oak. Very full nose with lots of upfront appeal, however, compared to the Burgundy, it's lacking subtlety - it's like a big fuzzy hammer you'd get at a carnival, whereas the Bourgogne's aromas were more focused and precise like surgical tools. The initial palate is very sweet, round, and fleshy, showing the same lush fruit that was on the nose. Very ripe (borderline overripe) fruit with a corresponding low level of acidity, however there are nice balanced tannins. Soft, almost flabby. The finish gets a little ragged around the edges with slight attenuation.
In the end, this wine is very accessible (obvious), it sets the table and does all the work for you, whereas the Bourgogne forces you to go out and forage and work a little for the experience.

  • Really wish I had read KPB's note before dinner. Tight and unimpressive upon opening. An hour and a half later the last sips were showing much better. Should have stuck the cork back in at the start and had it for dessert or the next day.

  • Medium ruby... rather reductive nose; this is a wine that really needs air. DECANT 2 hours! But then has a lively strawberries and cola nose, basmati rice, forest loam, medium bodied with a long ripe finish. Probably best around 2012.
