  • Impressive structure, fruit and complexity. And I love big tannic wine, but these are a bit too bitter atm, clashing for me even with rich food. If I was drinking again anytime soon, simple fatty cut of steak is probably the only option. Otherwise give it 5-8 years.

  • Smokey, dark fruited slightly mysterious nose. Ripe, dark, earth inflected fruit on the palate - full of Aglianico flavor. Juicy. Tannins very present, gripping the gums, but they are fully ripe. Hard to fault this for what it is. This has the balance of components you hope for in a beautiful vintage. If you believe Aglianico is a worthy grape variety, surely has the potential to be really interesting in 5 years or so assuming the fruit develops complexity and the tannins calm down. An Italian wine to its core. Full of sun and passion. There is nothing remotely French about this. Bottles tasted over the following two months seemed a bit more retrained - but just a bit.

  • Decanted 3 hours. Dark. This has the very particular grape flavor that is young Aglianico. Darkly mysterious. Not particularly floral or perfumed - this is all dark fruit and savory notes of cedar and earth. A wine of considerable textural weight on the palate - the wine is in no way delicate or lifted or pretty. There is depth to the fruit and one senses a lot still to come. It is still tight. Not yet complex. And the tannins are fully ripe but big and need quite a bit of time. i don’t know if you can make an Aglianico for early consumption like a Langhe Nebbiolo but this suggests you cannot in this vintage. I understand 2016 to be a great classically structured vintage for Aglianico in Campania, so no one should be surprised you might need to wait several years on this. I would encourage stashing a few of these away to try again in 6 or 7 years - its an Irpinia of formidable proportions. Only a slight lack of length today betrays it's more modest pedigree. Surely a terrific value. Just wait.

  • Very nice aglianico. Fresh fruit, bright cherries with the classic aglianico profile in the background. Leather and cedar aromatics....long dry finish. A few years may benefit this wine, but very good now. Great value at $20.
