  • Very similar in some ways to my only other experience with Cobb, a 2012 Coastlands "1906" PN. Even with the age gap, they showed a familiar combination of rich red fruit, silky textures, and a very present, distinct earthiness.

I liked this more than that 2012, for a few reasons. I felt the freshness here worked better, and the greater fruit presence helped to balance the strong earthy tone in an extremely nuanced way. The nose was full of fresh raspberry pie, maybe even rich enough to feel like chambord, but also a huge blast of earthy pine, mossy bark, and even a bit of mushroom. It's not the "bright" kind of pine-needle earthy tone sometimes found in Oregon, for example- this is a dark earthiness, slightly dank. It reminds me of the Mount Eden Pinot, except with better fruit. I wouldn't say this was super powerfully-scented or extremely deep, but I still loved the nose.

Palate was exactly the same, round and rich but with good integrated acidity to help provide lift. Lots of dark red fruit. The earthy tone was competing a bit with the fruit on the finish sometimes- other times, it felt perfectly in tune. A really fantastic PN that feels like a great example of CA terroir, both in terms of the fruit and complexity.

  • Maybe a little youngish but hard to see how it’s not good to go inside of the next 24 months but wouldn’t be surprised to see this drinking well to the end of the decade.. Ate with thick cut, sous-vide pork chops and it was an outstanding paiiring. Anderson Valley makes a great Pinot and this was no exception.
