I did like this in the end and it had some good things going for it, especially for $10, but even for that price I think it was a bit of a miss. I'm a little confused by that, because I've tried previous vintages a cpl times before, and thought they were delicious, simple but totally lovely. Maybe this was an off vintage or an off bottle? It's my first I'm writing a note for.
Not much of interest on the nose. Seems reductive, with peppery matchstick aromas and very little fruit to match, save for the faintest fresh plum that I wished had more room to breathe.
The palate was the highlight- acidity feels fresh, natural, and well-balanced for the price, supported by somewhat more present fruits, blue/purple colored but still somewhat vague and nondescript. Some black licorice too. It ends on an unbalanced tart note as the ripeness fades before the acid. That's pretty much it. Good structure, but the reduction or general smoky tone is overwhelming a pretty good cheap wine here. Might buy another to see if it was just bottle variation.

Dusty and smoky with a racy finish. And gobs of balsamic.

Balsamic nose. Herbaceous. Fairly Tannic. Nice for the price.
