From a bottle that came ex-cellar via K&L. This pours light garnet in the glass with medium bricking. The nose is extremely expressive from the first pop showing vanilla, alcohol, charred oak, cinnamon sugar, bourbon, sweet cedar, a touch of prune, black tea, dark ripe dried cherry, and a touch of dried orange peel. While the dried cherry and orange peel is really quite nice, the bourbon type notes here hold this back a little for me. The palate enters on mostly red fruit that is quite ripe with velvity medium minus tannin and medium plus orange tinged acid. The finish replays much of the nose with significant alcohol protruding alongside some vanilla, charred oak, and black tea. I love Calera and find enjoyment in this bottle but I think the oak treatment and ripeness got away from them just a little here.

End-of-Summer bounty with wines (Chicago): Brilliant light ruby color. The nose fairly leaps out of the glass with enticing, autumnal secondary notes and bright red fruits: sour cherry and cranberry maybe. The palate has relaxed into a wonderful marriage of fruit and acid here, with its juiciness drawn across the whole length of palate by a brightness that is totally integrated with the fruit, making this at once smooth and light in weight. Some firm, chalky tannins make an appearance on the back end too. This could surely age more, as the balance of structure and fruit is exquisite, and there's still more to resolve. But if you have several, do yourself a favor and try one now.

(Calera Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard) Dark red violet color; deep soy, beefy and possibly faulty nose; high acidity, a bit thin, like a NZ Pinot, with a bark note; medium finish

Earthy with faded, dried fruit and a touch of herbs. Easy going and smooth though slightly tired.
