Gentle red cherries, vanilla oak, dark chocolate and toasted spices on the nose. Very classic Rioja. Delicious and balanced. Palate is rich and polished. Not much depth and power for a Gran Reserva in the mid-palate. The quality is more like a Reserva. Finish is firm with some savoury notes and ripe blue fruits. Ready to drink now. A few years of aging helps to smoothen the tannins.

Nice enough but disappointing when compared to the Reserva... dried fruits, cinnamon, some cooked meats flavours... fruit, acid and tannins all in balance but not as complex and interesting as I had hoped. Happy to have tried it, but there are better wines out there for the money.

A week ago I had CV Gran Reserva 2013 and it was big disappointment. 4 years ago I had CV Reserva 2012 and I liked it very much I told to myself: either my taste changed for good or bad or something wrong is with this wine. Fortunately I had this 2016 bottle in my cellar and I opened it today to see what's going on. Unfortunately I don't like this wine and fortunately it looks like my taste is more sophisticated now. Basically I don't see too much different between Grand Reserva and Reserva. Both of them have watery structure, a lot of oak and unbalanced tannins. Best part are aromas of red fruits, smoke and chocolate. Also finish is not too bad - mix of milk chocolate and sweet cherry. Wine is smooth with no acidity or spice or is flat.

Dark. Smokey and intense dominant. Notes of dark fruit and smoke/tobacco.

Decent enough Rioja and certainly a step up from their Reserva. Red fruits and some meatiness. Should be more complex in 5 years or so.
