Armand Rousseau Chambertin Dinner (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): Shockingly good Village level wine, that comes across as beautifully and unmistakably "Gevrey" with its black fruit and roasted meat. Very good balance here, clearly from a ripe vintage, but so fresh for its age (I'd have thought 2002 or 2005). OK just medium density, but that's still great for Village level wine at this age.

Tasted 1999. This has absolutely stood the test of time. Beautiful and intense cocoa and coffee aromas with a hint of leather. Then exploded on the palate with peppery strawberries mixed with chocolate and mint. Wow!

Lunch at Ashino. Ex domaine. This was a lovely matured village. Pale red and very clear. Lovely nose of pomegranate, grapefruit, cherries, smoke, mineral and boiled beef. A tap simplistic on the palate, but there was a really good balance of red fruit and acid. With extended time, there were more secondary characteristics - sandalwood, incense, coffee powder and black tea. In a prime drinking window, this will not improve further but no signs of dropping off the cliff anytime soon.

Pale red & cloudy, upon opening a very sous bois nose with little Pinot red fruits, blew away in the glass, red cherries, lovely on the palate, fully mature and doubt this will improve, drank together with a 2012 which was young, oaky but a lot more fruits, it was quite a contrast one past its peak and one too young 90

Pretty sumptuous for a villages. Purple, some bricking and a little cloudy. Black fruit, bit if vegetable on the nose. Lovely purity with Burgundian febrility in the mouth, good length, sour cherry lick to finish. Spoiling ourselves on a Wednesday evening.

(Armand Rousseau Gevrey Chambertin) Cherries and bubblegum on the nose and not much else. Way candied on the palate with a soft texture and nice fruit but lower acidity than I like. Not bad but pretty flat.
