2020 Baettig Los Parientes Pinot Noir showed a good balance between vibrant fruits and savoury qualities. The youthful Chilean Pinot Noir was clear and medium ruby in colour. Though the glass stem was still visible from top, the colour was a tad deeper than a typical Pinot.
Popped and poured, it was quite reticent and closed aromatically. With three hours in bottle, expressive aromas of cranberry, strawberry, rose petals and sweet-scented lilac jumped out of the glass. Underneath were Ceylon tea leaves and savoury tones of smoked game, black olives and autumn leaves. The flavours were better integrated on the second day.
The mouthfeel was dry and medium-bodied, with a medium level of silky tannin and a medium-high level of pleasing acidity. Flavours of vibrant red cherry, raspberry and cola transitioned to liquorice and earth in a rather long, savoury finish. The 13.5% alcohol was well-integrated. The empty bottle weighed 597 grams. The humble Chilean Pinot exceeded my expectations by a wide margin. Reviews on CellarTracker were mixed. I could not decide whether it was down to aeration or bottle variation. I would not complain, as I had good time with my bottle.
Detailed information is provided on Nicholas Pearce Wines merchant's website. Planted recently in 2013, the Pinot Noir vines are cultivated on volcanic soil with a texture of clay to loam. The grapes are harvested in the last ten days of March, and fermented with 8% whole cluster inclusion. The wine was raised in French oak barrels for ten months, of which 10% are new.

Deep red colour. Blindly I would have said gamay or perhaps cabernet franc. On the nose banana, strawberries and potting soil. Greenish and herbal palate. Slightly gamey. Persistent acidity and moderate tannins come last. Lacks harmony and balance.

Doesn't taste like Pinot.
