This is about my favourite entry level malt whisky. It is smoky, peaty and iodine infused with more finesse than most from the mainland and without marked fishiness and extraneous barrel flavouring. Very good.

Benchmark Islay. All others are measured against this because of its consistency and easy availability. Straightforward smoky dram, the cliches about its taste are well known though the medicinal note is usually over emphasised and the sweet/salt character underplayed. If it's been a while it's worth revisiting to test your assumptions. Always worthwhile, especially if you're able to get the 43% stuff.

This has been one of the most constant whiskies in terms of flavour in the 40 years I’ve been drinking them. Tarry rope, nice citrus, a touch medicinal and loads of smoke. Excellent.

W.A.N.K. (Zoom call): Smoke, BBQ pork, touch of brett; this gets increasingly medicinal with time, honey. In the mouth it's smoky with a bit of a mid palate scoop, finishes quite honeyed. Hmm.
