  • the initial response to this bottle was criticism - too young, and should have been long ago decanted, what am I waiting for? But this is Soldera not Solaia so i allowed myself to be unperturbed by others' confusion, and the first taste validated my hunch. This wine was a joy to drink, with lovely unwound earthy red fuits including strawberry delicately dancing on the tongue. This is clearly a wine of finesse rather than power and on this night, at age 8, it was humming and dare i say sexy. my WOTN. Bottle No 00201.

  • Soldera vs Stella (Gemma): Popped at 12pm, slow ox in the bottle, drank about 830pm. Rather tertiary for the age, hint of mushroom, lacking depth on the nose. a little oak showing, touch modern on the palate, lacks a core.

  • Second tasting. Previous round using Zalto Burgundy glass and gave it full hundred points. This time round I did not use proper glassware and didn't get the previous scores? or is it bottle variation?

Pronounced nose with notes of fig, prune, bubble gum, black fruits, toast. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin.

  • Opened at Caprice in HK. Slow-oxed for a few hours before being slowly enjoyed over dinner.

Gorgeous sweet, seductive red fruit nose of cherries and roses. Incredibly smooth on the palate with a very long finish - intense but light on its feet. Soldera signature.

We compared this to the 2016 Stella VCLC and this was by far the more forwardly expressive and aromatic. Really enjoyable, but if I were to nitpick I didn't think that this bottle had the longevity of some other Solderas I've had, both from this vintage as well as others. However, this might be due to slight sniffles on my part meaning I wasn't able to fully appreciate it.

Soldera is always a pleasure, and I had a great time with this. Is it too young? Perhaps - I do think it will improve a little with age, but it is just so enjoyable now.

  • Opened at Otto e Mezzo. Slow-oxed for 2.5 hours before being enjoyed over a long lunch and beyond.

Sacrificed this one in the name of science, and was not disappointed. Absolutely wonderful bouquet of cherry-dominated red fruit on the nose, matched by a sweet and seductive yet very structured palate that went down so smoothly despite its youth, and left a wonderfully long finish. Evolved as you'd expect throughout with more air, and even though the red fruit was always there, it went through a full cycle of slight grumpiness and also giving off other surprising notes that even included hints of caramel and popcorn. Wow.

What stops this from getting a higher score is that I don't think this is fully integrated yet. It's drinking beautifully, but there's definitely upside here. Everything can loosen up just a bit more, and gain a few more layers. I can't wait to see what this is like in 5+ years, and I hope I can resist the temptation to open more in the meantime.
