Burgundy 2011 Day 1: Visit to Domaine Vincent Dancer (Chassagne-Montrachet): This was served blind by Vincent Dancer, but the vintage was easy enough to pick out and a few of us guessed that it must a generic Bourgogne rather than the village. Still though, it was punching above its weight. For one thing, it had a stunning nose, with yellow fruits layered over cream of mushroom, caramel and rice pudding scents, with just that touch of crème brulee at the edges that gave the 2003 away. The palate confirmed the impression on the nose – lots of rich yellow fruit, some toasty nuttiness and some ripe, sweet apples. Still, for all the ripe toastiness, it was actually well balanced for a 2003, with a certain crispness to it as it entered into a long, creamy textured finish that showed more apples, and just a touch of spicy heat and a bittersweet tang. Not perfect, but very good for what it is.

Rich truffles and round. Rich nose but needs more acidity. Cream waffles.

Mushroom, caramel, toasty nose. This is creamy, rounded and full bodied. This is a superb bourgogne
