  • My first Marie Courtin wine, and it did not disappoint. Upon opening it was a little subdued, mostly giving up ripe apple with a hint of citrus, and eventually moving into the orange marmalade/candied citrus peel territory. Wood adds some nice spice and depth, and there's definitely minerality on the finish too, but this is drinking in a great spot right now. Everything feels very integrated and delicious.

  • Champagne At Astrid's Place (all served blind) (In the South OC): Served blind. July 2020 disgorgement, 100% Chardonnay. Yesterday this showed some of the rougher edges that the bottle I had a few months back displayed (which we finished over a 90 min meal). Lean with a citrus pithy quality. Tangy orange, lime, some stone fruited peach yet the finish is still tight....I was able to take home the leftover wine, stopper it up and retaste it again tonight, so it's got another 24 hrs open, plus my tasting context tonight is different (at home, just this wine and the 2019 MC Resonance side by side), able to really focus on what is here. The wine has softened, not all the way as there is structure still here, but it's lost some of the tight feel. Instead, it's added some juicy pineapple, along with the lemon remaining vivid. The extra air allows the texture to come through, and while this is not going to ever be more than a medium weight, leaner style of wine, there is a cool transparency with these wines that I enjoy and get charged up for.

  • Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Rob (Water Grill in Costa Mesa): Another bottle of the July 2020 disgorgement. Served blind. The tension and clarity of the wine seemed pretty good, the coil and clean acid signature, too. The wood adds some seasoning to this bottle, along with a stony note and green apple. Overall, enjoyed this but I did sense some roughness in the wine last night, so less pleasing than the one from a few months ago. Cannot retaste today so maybe the balance I wanted would come though more with air.

  • I struggled to describe the taste until I read Frank’s note calling it orange marmalade. I get that as well as pear. It is light on its feet but has good depth. Delightful.

  • July 2020 disgorgement of 100% Chardonnay, farmed bio without dosage,. Pulled this on a whim tonight. Gotta say, this bottle showed some polish and generosity that I had not found in the previous bottles. One comment I heard around the table was 'honey', and I can't recall saying that about this wine before. And for me, my sense of the wine was orange marmalade, which again is not what I attribute to Eloquence. I really enjoyed this bottle, and the expression it showed revealed something I wasn't expecting, which is very cool....retasting again the following day, I kept the wine under stopper. Today I get much more of the acidity, lots of lemony energy wrapping around a saline texture. When I let some warmth enter the wine, the apple comes through, but I don't get the marmalade today. But, I do get some apricot/stone fruit, even a little orange flesh. I did a few tastes of this tonight and man this has the energy and spine, which is why I have consistently been such a fan of Dominique's Chardonnay. This is really good.
