Cabernet Franc Global Smackdown (Canoehead Central): Part of a Global Smackdown tasting of Cabernet Franc wines. Double-decanted (min. one hour) and served blind. Lovely fresh nose of ripe red and dark red fruit. Was a tad vegetal before the swirl but that blew off. Great fruit (wild berry and rhubarb coulis) and savoury elements on the tongue – smokiness, green olive. Mouth-filling but quite lively. Testament to Ontario’s ability to grow, ripen and astound with Cab Franc. One favourite vote and two 2nd place votes.

Before trying this CF, a co-worker described it as being very funky. As someone that tends to like funky foods & flavors in general, I put it at the top of my list of “Wines to try.”
Right from the start, I could smell the “funk,” even though I had no idea what exactly they had meant. Blackberry, oak, maduro cigar & baker’s chocolate immediately jumped out at me.
These aromas stayed consistent on the tongue, though some cherry notes seemed to poke their way out, even if only for a second.
The backend brings flashes of cedar & charred sage. Aged CF does it for me - this will only get better, folks.
