Last bottle …. Opened at 3:00 served at 6:30. As with all of the bottles from this parcel, youthful dark ruby core, nose initially reticent but after a half hour in the glass the fruit. And out along with minerals earth and some floral notes. Balanced with a lovely mouthfeel, good acidity and a persistent finish. Well stored bottles have another decade of improvement ahead

Knights of Alba (KOA) BYO Barbaresco Dinner (Legacy Records): From a magnum. Big and intense and still fresh. Darker fruits. Well structured and can see the value that the oak provides to the really old wines in terms of keeping a certain level of power still there. Drinks very well.

Paired with the 1988 Sori Tildin … Decanted at 4:30 served at 7:30
Similar dark core, youthful appearance. The SSL offered its fruit forward bouquet immediately where the ST was far tighter and unyielding. By the time these were served the ST had gathered itself and showed as richer and more serious, with darker fruit, earth, baking spice and hints of rose petals. The SSL nose remained far lighter and more red fruited with similar spice accents but more rose petal, more playful.
Both had fine tannins, good acidity and balance. As with the bouquet the ST showed a darker, deeper more complex palate. Where the SSL showed a lighter more elegant style.
By the end of the meal @ 10:30 the ST had peaked and edged the SSL as the better wine of the evening

Wow - this feels way younger than it is! Dark red and ripe juicy berries, blueberries and a little leather. Vibrant body with nice tannins. Long and beautiful finish. Can easily age another decade. The best Sori San Lorenzo I ever had. (Tasted at Decanter Fine Wine Encounter 2019 Masterclass.)

Decanter Gaja Masterclass - 30 Years of Legendary wine making presented by Gaia Gaja (Decanter FWE, The Landmark hotel, London): Impressively dark in color for the age and definitely a lot better and elegant than the 1990s we had before. Very solid wine, well aged, earthy but still with healthy and very much alive fruit. Impressive actually for the age and a superb wine. No need to go further here. 94-95
