  • New departure for me : Spanish wines & what a revelation they have been. Although quite a popular choice in Europe , not the same recognition across the pond it appears. Unfortunately so as there are surprises aplenty with Spanish Rioja and this Miguel Merino Rioja La Loma 2018 is no exception. Comprising of 90% Temparillo and 10% Garancha. Soft oak notes along with red cherry , wood smoke and warm earth on the nose. Leading to velvety soft fruit mélange of black raspberry, ripe cherry, peach juice ending with a slight rhubarb touch of acidity. Touches all the right bases for those fans of heavier Pinot Noir style wines. In fact it could rate up there with the best of them. That good and at only $40 a genuine steal. One of those wines, where you just feel like the winemaker whether by sheer luck or careful design created a remarkably good wine.
