Forest notes, underwood, red cherries, and mushrooms on the nose. Good acidity with tart red fruit, more forest notes, berries, and mushrooms on the palate. A bit thinner than the nose would suggest, but with enough backbone to keep it interesting. Nice finish. This was probably a few years past peak, but drank well still.

K's Visit (SPD Paragon): Cloudy, brown rim. Much secondary note of tea leaves, earth, leather intermixed with a mixture of dried and fresh fruits. The wine getting livelier with air. Tannin is still quick firm but well buffered by good level of sweet fruits and nice acidity. Good length. This is really very good for a 1988, still showing young but I like it at this stage. Guessed 1995.

Still some slightly hard tannin, rather tart cranberry/raspberry fruit, coffee, bacon. Enjoyed more with some air. Don’t think I would have pegged for Grand Cru, but nice 30 year old Burg with that slightly tough ‘88 style. B+

Medium garnet robe. Popped and poured over two hours. Little changed in that time. The showed a mulberry and raspberry, dried porcini, and spice were dominant. I detected occasional notes of leather, chocolate, and smoke; the aroma was just a touch animalistic (much more so right upon opening). The wine was lively and just a little bit angular, the tannins showed good grip. Drink or hold. This has a lot of life in it.
