  • Epic Napa Trip - Day 3: Tasted at Melka's Lithology winery - This was a tasting I was also looking forward to. These wines are new project by Jayson Hu. The thought here is to showcase the talent of individual winemakers. Grapes are sourced from reputable places throughout the valley and three famed winemakers use the grapes to fashion a wine that showcases their talent. The three winemakers are: Thomas Rivers Brown, Philippe Melka and Benoit Touquette. The winemaker overseeing the project is Michel Rolland, who also makes a blend using barrels selected by each winemaker (only magnums).

The first vintage of this wine (2018) was released this year with a price tag of $1000. All the wines are remarkable, IMO. They definitely seem structured enough to age for quite a while but are also showing hedonistic fruit right now. Of course, when you talk about big price points, you should also be think aging the wine....after all, that is a large part of paying such a premium, iMO.

TN - Nose showed lots of dark fruit (blackberry mostly) with some lavender and herbs and notes of cigar box. The palate was dominated by dense, creamy black fruit, some herbs and tree bark with hints of pine needles. Rich mouthfeel with fine tannins. This wine came across as the most structured of the three wines. 95+ today.

  • Napa trip day 3 (Napa): Drank a glass at the Lithology winery over an hour. Talk about a yin-yang experience going from MacDonald to Fairest Creature. This wine is rich, ripe and tasty but it has the stuffing to suggest that its best days are ahead of it, it probably isn't showing that great today.
