Matthews' 2019 Claret is sourced from several small vineyard parcels within three AVAs: Royal Slope, Columbia Valley, and Red Mountain. An opaque crimson blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, it was fermented in a combination of concrete (54%) and stainless steel (46%) tanks, subsequently being aged for 21 months in French oak barriques (67% new). Impressively aromatic, it delivers an attractive profile of black currants, red licorice, mulling spices, rosemary and white pepper. Full-bodied, freshly acidic and with well-woven oak, it delivers flavors in line with the aromas and throws no heat from its 14.6% alcohol when served at 60-65°F. The tannins are plentiful but refined, lending structure to the solid mid-palate and medium-to-long finish. There is plenty of stuffing here to ensure enjoyment for several more years. Give it at least an hour in decanter if you choose to open it at this early stage. Drink now-2030.
