  • Saturday, June 25, 2005 Rosé Blowout Prior to the Zinfandel Evening of Zingers An evening with the Tinsleys, Sheets, and Smileys. Surprisingly, they all agreed to drink pink wine. Anticipating opening only 2 bottles, we ultimately opened and finished 4 and had one more partially consumed. With crab dip, sauccison, sauccison au pauvré and goat cheese. Butch and Mark commented that 30 minutes before they arrived they never would have believed they’d be drinking pink wine and liking it. Dme. Bernard Baudry Chinon Rosé 2004 Undoubtedly, the best of the lot. Ripe strawberry, spice/sandlewood smoke and cream. With a creamy texture that invites you back to the glass time and time again. Just like the salmon color captures the eye. Balanced and gorgeous. For a rosé, the finish lingers. 12.5% alc. Some surprised faces when I announced it was Cab. Franc. Dme De La Rectorie Collioure 2004 My second favorite. While the strawberry is not as bright or as focused, it’s a fairly balanced, clean and crisp wine. Not as big on the finish as the Baudry. I don’t know if it is the wine or the girl on the label that makes this wine so alluring, but it’s damn hard not to return time and time again to this bottle. 13% alc. Dme De La Mordorée Tavel 2004 Certainly the most distinctive of the rosés, what with, I suspect is grenache and syrah. The biggest and boldest of the crowd. Juicy and spicy with some smoked meat quality, yet crisp enough to satisfy on a summer evening. At a whopping 14.5% alc., this will smack you on the back in more than one way. Dme De Fondreche L’Instant Cotes du Ventoux 2004 An orangie-red color that looks like a strawberry with a tinge of marmalade. Soft and round, but with a toasty note not found in the smoky Baudry or the alluring Rectorie. A bit manufactured maybe, but a solid go to rosé. 13.5% alc.
