  • Decanted for an hour then back to bottle, followed.

Color is ruby and somewhat translucent. Not expected for the blend. Nose is elegant with flowers, blue and purple fruit, underpinned by savory meaty aromas. Palate is full bodied and fills the mouth. There's a touch of acid that uplifts the blue fruit and floral character. Certainly some herbs in here as well. Finish shows fresh berries, savory meats, and the slightest medicinal tinge.

The fruit and florality of this wine give it an ethereal character, but it doesn't stand up to the the palate's mouthfeel and glycerin. A few notches underpowered. 12.9% alcohol was appealing but I'm not sure it works here. Will recork and put in fridge. Probably 87-88 but will update with day 2.

Day 2: 3/4th of bottle corked in fridge. Better at cellar temp. Palate has become much more medium bodied and focused on blueberries and herbs. Finish is meaty berries and cola. Better today, maybe 88-89. Probably not my palate preference but solid quality.

  • A bright, but meaty wine, but paradoxical because it also seems light. So which is it? On the palate, some sage and clove, then allspice, and black olive. Lots of minerality and a hint of leather here. In the end, it’s a decent food wine, to be sure, but lacks any sort of precision, complexity, or power of a wine of distinction. A decent value for the purchase price, and will be most appealing to those who are fans of Washington Syrah.
Decanted about 3-hours, little change after decant.

    61% Syrah, 31% Grenache, 8% Carignan
    100% Walla Walla Estate vineyard
    40% new French oak
    12.9% alc.

  • Ok, I’ll go first…

PnP: in the glass, lighter than I expected given the varietal makeup. on the nose, medicinal cherry and bright red fruit. Even the faintest touch of citrus. No noticeable oak. A bit thick on the palate and the medicinal nature of the fruit is evident. Tannins are quite unpronounced. I don’t know if this is going to develop into anything complex, but I predict it will be smooth and enjoyable.

1hr: the nose is really starting to fire up nice red and blue fruits, smoked meat, pepper, and a touch of oak I didn’t pick up at the PnP. On the palate, the entry is smooth but there’s still a fair bit of the medicinal characteristic on both the mid palate and finish; it presents as astringent from the mid-palate to the finish. Super low tannin.

90 mins: this has rounded into a nice wine. Nose is traditional Rhone blend — I’d even argue you can pick out northern Rhone Syrah style. Smooth entry, the medicinal characteristics in the mid palate have blown off. Nice long finish.

I was worried about this wine at the PnP and 1hr mark. It luckily came into its own. It’s not super complex and it doesn’t necessarily standout as remarkable. But it’s just good wine. For <$15, this is nice. Not one I would sink into the cellar for a few years, but it will drink nicely for the foreseeable future.
