Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • Tuesday, February 24, 2004 Clear, dark liquid gold in color. Toast, loads of toast, vanilla and pineapple ...and oak. At first I thought this would be another Va. chard. from 2001 which had been over oaked to try to make the fruit into more than it could ever be. The oak was very noticeable. Vanilla and oak on the first taste. In fact, I was prepared to go and open something else, but she who must be obeyed prevailed ... as she usually does; ’Give it a chance,’ she said. Damn! I hate it when she is just so right! With the cream and broth of the chicken pot pie and the toastiness of the biscuits, the wine actually worked quite well. Toast, butter, pineapple and tropical fruit, some mineral (not much), vanilla and .... and no noticeable wood. The food cut right through it and muted it. 12% alc. With homemade chicken pot pie and real county biscuits. Man, I love that dish! 2/24/04. I’ve never seen sediment like this in a white. Yeah, I know about tartrates and what they look like. But this was not attached to the cork. This was down the sides of the bottle. No matter which way I turned the bottle, a stream of crystals remained down the side. At the bottom of the bottle a huge chunk of crystals remained. This was about 3/4’ in length by 1/4’ or more in height and width. If this wasn’t tartrates what would it have been?
Sunday, April 18, 2004 a true under-performer. Very tight. Almost wish I’d decanted it. Very light on fruit, no mineral .... just not much ’there’ there.
