Lovely cabernet notes of bell pepper, blackcurrants, blackberry leaves and cassis, together with some cocoa powder. I like the freshness. Medium body and creamy, powdery tannins. Juicy and extremely drinkable. 80% cabernet sauvignon, the rest merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and some malbec. Drink from 2023.

COMMENTARY: The 2019 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is generous and stylish with a pleasing finish on the palate. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits aromas and flavors of ripe berries and an accent of oak. Enjoy it with grilled lamb chops. (Tasted: December 9, 2021, San Francisco, CA)

A solid, forthright Cabernet, with cedar and warm stone notes framing the core of gently steeped black currant and blackberry fruit. Savory and loam accents flash through the finish.

  • Pop and pour from a 375ml, I should have decanted. The oak is quite evident and the fruit is bold. Despite that, this is clearly a quality wine and a decent Napa cab that will obviously show better in a few years time.

  • Boy, did this wine change a ton post-decant. When I first popped it, it almost seemed sweet, and had way too much red cherry-like (soda?) flavor. Decanted for about 90 minutes, and it got quite a bit better. Darker fruits, and more balance. Depth and mouthfeel was better. Sadly, still have to say there’s no need to get more. I’d suggest spending a bit more and get their Oakville or BDX offerings.

  • Robert Mondavi Winery Masterclass Tasting (Hattenheim, Germany): Deep purple red. Medium intensity on the nose: blackcurrant, blueberry, black plum, cherry, green pepper. No surprise here, this is very typical of the variety. Also on the palate, here it is mainly cherry and plum. Medium length. Solid, but for me no clear profile and not affordable relative to many wines in its Bordeaux-style peer group. [First published on]
