  • served immediately after decanting. Acidity was here but we still had some body and tannins here. Woodsy and 'old' nose as mom would describe, with mint and a bit of smoke. More cigar smoke showed after 20 minutes. Drinking reasonably well for such an old wine.

  • Last Bern's trip (Bern's Steakhouse (Tampa)): In every trip to Berns we've had an old Bordeaux that just stunned us. Something that wasn't clearly going to be great maybe because the year was off or whatever, but a good producer and so one we've taken a flier on. This was that bottle. More expensive than many in the past, but my theory was I've never had a bad HB and we were celebrating. I'll say I've still never had a bad HB. This was a very good wine. Clearly the best at the table. Worth the extra money? Unclear. I think Bern's has up'ed their prices quite a bit on some of these and so finding the really great deals and also a good name is basically impossible. Still, this was my WOTN and memorable even if not quite as good as the '43 Ausone or '16 Conseillante from dinners past.

  • rebouchée en 1999, ex-château 2013 - served 30 minutes after opening. Nose was really nice and smoky... a classic claret, with pencil lead and graphite notes as well as lovely woody fragrance. Not surprisingly the wine didn't last long in the glass. Still got some body here even after almost 80 years, and actually gained a little weight in glass with aeration. After 1 hour the wine was still fresh and lively, with some sweetness. The peak was clearly between 1 and 1½ hours, after which it started to go downhill. As an ex-château bottle, the condition was clearly better than the bottle we opened last year.

  • initially a little dirty, stinky, bretty, smoky, but still have fruity notes like prunes. Surprisingly crisp and fresh sweetness underneath. About 10 minutes later, the nose showed more leather and stewed prunes notes, even some pencil lead. With the second pour some 30 minutes later, the nose was clearly less fresh, and palate showed more acidity. It all went downhill after 45 minutes.
