  • Deep Ruby, pronounced intensity with primary notes of black fruit (currant, black cherry, black plum), secondary notes of spicy cedar and mild charred oak. Palate is dry, medium acid, full body, prononced primary and secondary flavors, with a long finish. A very good to outstanding wine. The tannins are silky and, thankfully, feels and appears not to have been filtered. Drank over three nights and the last night was the best - yes, should wait another year or two to open the next one.

At 1/3 bottle per night, I could feel the effects of the alcohol. This all surprised me for a VA cab sauv, especially for the declared 14.8% ABV (it may actually be higher).

Alas, it is from La Cienega vineyard in in Alexander Valley and although I liked it now, it should do well for the next five years or more. At $37 at the winery it is priced about right - a good value with club member discounts, and especially when included in the monthly wine club offering. Glad I have another - look forward to acquiring a few more.

This is a sophisticated wine that benefits from the minimum intervention characteristic of VA winemaking, making it much more authentic to the grapes than had it been manipulated in CA.
