  • black cherry, black currant, red florals, tobacco, cassis, charred loam, leather, cigar box and spice.

Nice aromatics, fresh acidity on the palate with not overly matured fruit and a clean mouthfeel. Continued to open up with air getting fuller.

Opened by Mike Dunn himself, what a treat to taste. The bottles were labeled Napa Valley because Howell wasn't officially a recognized region yet.

  • decanted 45 minutes; subtle sandalwood nose, with sage and other herbal notes; dark ruby red with just a touch of bricking under intense bright lights; tart red cherry flavors mixing with more herbal notes, there is still a lot of fruit in this wine, just not juicy/fresh fruity kind; the tannin's are soft but very integrated with the palate and leads to a smooth finish.
This is something only time can make. Amazing.

  • From a 5L. It was a bit of a process to get the cork out. Wax had to be softened and underneath that the cork was fairly soaked through and crumbly. Strained and decanted and enjoyed. This was prob a touch over the hill if I had to guess, but still really quite enjoyable. It's got a full set of more tertiary notes - the olive tapanade. Still has the red fruits (a hint faded). Well balanced. Got better for the first 30 minutes of air and then seemed to even out and stayed strong through the end. Very enjoyable.

  • Surprisingly, rich, highly extracted black cherry fruit, rough, course cassis flavors, excellent structure, wine is still developing

  • Hart Davis Hart BYOB Dinner (Hinterland Gastropub, Milwaukee, WI): Similar to the previous bottle, very appealing tobacco, earth, and red fruit. Still very lively, this was fine drinking and would have been classic if it weren't for the massive and lingering tannins that really called for a solid food pairing.
