Very interesting wine. Complex flavors of new world blackberry, deep, dark fruit along with some hints of grass, forest floor and leather. A nice soft spice on the finish rounds out the tasting experience. However, what makes this Ribera Del Duero so unusual is how seemless these flavors all integrate into a powerful, yet smooth and delicate wine. You must give this at least two hours to decant to fully enjoy it.

2004 Spanish wines at the Magnum Society (Wellington, New Zealand): Colour deep purple red. I loved the bouquet on this wine. An unusual, intriguing expressive bouquet of Madeira, Christmas cake, preserved fruit, blackberry and some mochaccino. The bouquet was the same two days later. Also, slight reduction on the nose. Unctuous with a beautiful texture in the mouth. Real fruit weight and power, but with finesse and elegance. The flavours were blackberry, black cherry, Christmas cake, with some mocha and preserved fruit. Nothing harsh, asymmetrical or spikey on the palate. A lot of tannin but seamlessly integrated. Good mid palate fruit weight and length. Agreed with food. Distant second favourite of the group. Very modern and international in style. Re-tasting it I dropped down my assessment of this wine. I was seduced by its sensational bouquet, and ultimately wondered if it would really improve with cellar time. Relatively approachable, drink now, or in say the next 10 years.

Dark purple color with a rich, thick, creamy texture that really has a modern take. Exhibits a fruit-forward character with loads of ripe boysenberry, blueberry, plum sauce at the core with hints of cola, grainy oak and spice. Very well integrated, well-rounded, and more balanced compared to the 2005 vintage. Drink now until 2020.
