Tasted at the Shack following the Pajarito. If the Pajarito rolls with it, this is more argumentative, packing firmer acidity and more structure. The Cab Franc brightens the fruit and adds a whiff of pepper for complexity. Excellent - perhaps the standout of the taster.

Excellent Cab Franc character with lots of pleasing dusty notes. Improved after a few days so consider decanting. Well balanced with good acid backbone. Length was medium plus. Medium plus complexity with enough to keep us interested but not knock our socks off. Great value.

The "range" has a long history at Foxen. Originally a proprietary blend called Foothills Reserve (1999-2003), it became Alegria in 2004, only to be renamed officially Range 30 West in 2005. Range 30 West is the USGS coordinates for the Happy Canyon AVA and surrounding terrain in Santa Barbara County. The name was trademarked by Foxen to identify our Cabernet Franc / Merlot blend. The 2019 vintage is 63% Cab Franc and 37% Merlot. The Cab Franc portion was sourced from Santa Ynes vineyard, southeast and over a hill a mile or so from Vogelzang vineyard. Vogelzang is where we have sourced Merlot for our Range 30 West, Pajarito and Volpino blends since 2001. These are two Bordeaux varietals that blend very well together. The Cab Franc slightly dominates, with dusty blueberries, plum cake, tobacco and accents of paprika. The Merlot brings forth rose petal, red and black pluots and smooth tannins that keep the Cab Franc in line. This is a wine that begs for roasted cuisine. Prime rib with horseradish and potatoes au gratin or chicken paprikash with butter slicked eggs noodles come to mind for excellent pairings. Simone, our tasting room manager from Germany, suggests hasenpfeffer with spaetzle. Drink now through 2032.

One of the better 7200s I’ve had. A nice dark cherry and berry bouquet of aromas and flavors.
