Community Tasting Notes (5) Avg Score: 92.3 points

  • 13% ABV. Free SO2 at 7 mg/L (total at 38 mg/L), finished ageing on lees in Feb 2022 (hence the “mise tardive”).

PNP into Zwiesel Giacomo Conterno Sensory glass (“Flower” to “Leaf” day): Medium golden to the eyes.

On the nose, beeswax and savory and deep ripe citrus fruits like grapefruits and lemons with peels, orchard fruits like golden apples. Saline sea breeze like notes, florals. Touch of secondary notes of oatmeal and caramel / honey. Restrained hint of oxidative nuances. Can see why some may draw parallels to a top Chenin Blanc from Loire here.

High acidity, strong streak of minerality yet enveloped with a medium and mellow body, good balance here already and finishes with secondary notes per nose white spices.

Showcasing the quintessential “Chablis” style with lots of depth and elegance. 94 points easy.

  • Popped and poured into a Glasvin Universal. Nice long and quality natural cork. Brittle wax capsule.

The nose on this wine is captivating. It really jumps from the glass with a faint hint of reduction and lean but powerful lemon and yellow apple. There is saltiness and stone, a splash of mint, and also some delicate florals. Slowly, as the wine opens, there comes butter and toasted nuts. But just a hint, at the end.

The palate at cellar temperature is full and pillowy on entry. The mid palate is similarly voluminous with more of the crisp apple and lemon, but also crushed stone. The back half of the palate is carried by lively acid, with a lean, long finish that hints at some bruised apple. I’m not getting a ton of Chablis seashell and salt but this is nonetheless fantastic. The nose outperforms the palate, but for a village Chablis, outstanding.

  • I did not take detailed notes because I had guests but from memory I think Bagwhat has the flavor profile right.

My note to my supplier the next day was “whoa! what an amazing bottle of wine, simply outstanding balance and integration. It was my WOTD.” My guests however thought it was good but too intensely flavored. Oh well. Let them give out their own scores.

  • A very different expression of Chablis than I am used to. Opens up with a nose of fallen apples and oxidative notes. Vin nature style. A bit of saltiness emerges. A mix of red and green apples on the palate, quite rich and fat structure. Good acidity on the back. Intense, expressive, young, needs time. I have to follow this over a few days. If I was served this blind, I would never guess Chablis - Chenin Blanc perhaps.
