6 Bottles of Assyrtiko and Nielle's Birthday (Long Beach, CA): 16 hour skin contact and 8 months on the lees. I believed both of these techniques would work well on this variety. But unlike the last wine tasted (which was 48 hours and 4 months), this smelled clean. I believe both techniques contributed to a delicious Assyrtiko here.
Lemon juice, sea spray, salt, slate and wet stone on the nose. I guess "wet slate" would be appropriate. Intensity of aromas is medium +. It's almost fruit backward, though the lemon juice is too present to really put it in that category. The palate adds toasted almonds, white pepper and fresh baked bread; which really highlights the lees stirring on this. The long finish is driven by the almonds.
Medium + body, medium acid, long finish. This is a really well made Assyrtiko and the wine of the night for me. You can taste the winemaking process here in a great way. Drink now, probably at peak aged 4.
