Classic Nebbiolo nose with red and black cherries, roses and tar, as well as a lovely sweet spice component (star anise, cassia). This needed a couple of hours in the decanter to tame the acidity and tannins, but showed beautifully at D+3. Still quite tannic and tight, so best with food, with which it actually showed rather delicate.

This started off badly. First the cork broke on getting the bottle open. Then the first taste after pouring was off-putting: nearly tasteless at first followed by a strong tannic ending. But, at the two hour mark it finally started to open up and is quite enjoyable from that point on. I suspect this means that this is still too early for the optimal tasting point.

This should be cellared still longer. At least that's my sense. I opened this with great expectation, but am feeling underwhelmed with where it is right now. The nose is cigar heavy and yet reminds me of wet cedar trees in the fall. The taste feels like figs and fog with a dense complex web that I can't fully pick apart. The tannins are very thick. I did sample over a three hour time period, so I don't think it's only decanting time. One more bottle is in the cellar, so this should be sampled a year or more from now. (note added: this was better the 2nd night, going to a 91-92 range, further supporting the idea that this needs more cellar time)
